Just as black people will often refer to each other by using the n-word, using the derogatory word yourself does not make the word a less racist term.

As for the complete idiot above who said "it's like when we come together over a chardonnay and call Asians names" or whatever garbage you said, you need your head read. None of my friends would speak like that and I highly doubt they'd tolerate any small-minded idiot doing the same in their presence. Regardless of their hair color.  Roll Eyes

This topic comes up regularly on this forum, and frankly not one post on the subject has ever convinced me that the term ang moh is something over which to take such dire offense.

I wish I had so little going on in my life that I could get stressed about being called something as innocuous as an Ang Moh.  Really, many of us deserve to be called much worse (just browse through this site).

I'm confuse..... are we talking about Tanglin Art Studio relocating without due notice regardless of the fact that they were in an obligatory to both Landlord and clients or the fact that the Landlord, did not give them due notification of the fact that the term 'Ang Moh or Guiwlo or whatever carp is the nature of discussion...... I'm lost..... LET ME TRY TO BE CLEAR. THIS IS TYPICAL OF THE EXPAT COMMUNITY........... Let's just complain but not take responsibility about anything... It's in our nature...... Sit at the likes of PS Cafe and enjoy the ambiance and have the locals serves us.... and take a dig at the rest that does not meet out needs at that moment... Bottom line is ..... WE SUCK

well we are also bullies when we come together and congregate over a bottle of Chardonnay by calling the local Chinese 'Slant Eyes', "Yellow Skins" and the list goes on for all other ethnic Asian.

erm hang on a minute - I've never called anyone any of those names and I never will.  So forget all this 'we' - I'm not one of your party.

Again, less of the 'we' - what you do in your own spare time is up to you    Wink

Sadly, racist attitudes are not the domain of the lower orders.

Remember this?

Considering his position, Philip has made some amazingly rude and insensitive public comments. In 1986 while visiting China, he told a group of Scottish students in the city of Xian that Beijing was "ghastly" and said that if one of the students stayed in China too long, he would return to Scotland with "slitty eyes."
Reported in the press, comments such as these earned Philip widespread condemnation. His apologists have said that such remarks stem from his enduring frustration at perpetually playing second fiddle to his wife.

Prince Philip is from another era.  50 years ago (before political correctness) it was considered acceptable to say these things. It isn't now. However, saying a race of people has 'slitty eyes' is no worse than us being called 'round eyes'.  Maybe he thought Beijing was ghastly - not very diplomatic, but hardly racist.  It think Birmingham is ghastly, so what?
