As you already knew, beginning in the 2010-11 school year, all SAS high school students will be required to carry a laptop as part of their school supplies. I personally disapprove of this new policy. Accumulated research have shown that in-class laptop use not only causes the distraction but also can bring the students' grades down significantly.

I would like to hear more SAS parents' thoughts on this topic.

I haven't had a chance to give it much thought honestly.  I've been preoccupied by all the other bad decisions Administration has made lately.  Did the ever ask the parents what they thought?

What other 'bad decisions'?

At UWC it appears that most secondary school students already have laptops.

I also find it distracting,

I prefer when it was as before when children had to write with ink and quill on parchment.

No surprise, there's research on both sides of the argument. Just google 'laptops in classrooms' and lots of information pops up.  I thought this was a particularly good article:

$Pripps:  that was kind of a throw away post, wasn't it?  Why bother?

I totally agree that there are always both sides of any argument.

My point of view is that in-class laptop use should keep as an option but not a requirement in SAS. I know some international schools here have already begun to adopt laptop use in classroom.  It's really better for the kids in overall learning or it causes more problems (like distraction, grades down...) to the kids?

I'm concerned with possible theft issues.  Not to mention breakage possibilities. One drop on those hard hallway floors and good-by lap top.

Also can google "in-class laptop use" and many discussion and debates or research results can be found.

we're not SAS but our school tried to bring in a laptop policy for the year 6 primary and so many people complained that they scrapped it.  What you have to do is get enough parents who are against the system and make your voices heard.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to do right now. The school never asked us, the parents, what we thought about this new change and they just go ahead to make the final decision.

In fact, according to an article in the student-written and edited high school newspaper "The Eye", this new policy already caused mixed reactions among teachers. Many teachers are concerning about the potential for distractions such as Facebook, Youtube and messenging druing class. And some teachers who have begun to adopt laptop use in their classrooms already seen an increase in the number of online blogs and forums.

My son who never brings laptop to school said he won't bring laptop to school everyday unless it's necessary. As I said before, laptop use in-class should be a option not a requirement.

As a SAS parent, I'm feeling so helpless to this decision. After talking to some parents, no one agrees or approves on this new policy. They all actually are against to it. We just don't know what we can do about it.

I guess this can be counted as one of the bad decisions Administration has made lately. No, they never ever asked the parents what they though.

I think your post doesn't contribute anything intelligent. You don't take sides for or against so why bother posting? or do you think you are the only one who can google ? Grin

I agree, we're trying to have a serious discussion here.  Perhaps your 'humor' is better served on another topic?

To Tropical Fish:  I agree the best idea is to try to approach administration with your concerns.  What if you and the other parents wrote a letter or called for a meeting to discuss?
