Thanks everyone.

Old Mike, one way your could be more helpful would be if you could share something about your background, what you do, which country you are originally from, whether you are married (local or foreigner?) and have kids here, and (most importantly for me) why you have decided to stay here...if you feel comfortable doing so.

Old Mike is a regular in this board and I think that if you have been following the board for a while you would know answers to most of those questions.  At least I do and I just pop in and out once in a while...I don't mean this in a negative way.  If anyone's then at least Old Mike's comments are very valuable in here.

OK.
Born in England during the last century, spent most of my life in South Africa and came to Singapore over 9 years ago.
I work in a rather specialised are of the chemical industry and have been married to a South African for longer than most people have been alive. We have adult children and grandchildren ( Not adult)in South Africa.
There are lots of reasons why we stay in Singapore but probably the most important is that I find my work here interesting agreeable and lucrative enough to enable us to travel widely, learn more about people and cultures that were previously unknown to us, and visit our family when we like. Or pay for them to come to Singapore.

I  wonder if other people start to feel like that after an extended period as an expat.

I can definitely attest to that, I have been living abroad close to 25 years with some short interrupts in between but every time I go home I get extremely bored after a couple of weeks mainly due people's attitude, so narrow-minded. Maybe it is just that I never got over the culture shock which one also gets when returning home. I will have a go again in a couple of years :-)
Just an observation, don't mean to flame you but based on your regular postings in Living in Singapore you may have something in common with the narrow minded folks back home. I mean you seem fixated in running down the locals and their HDBs, PAP govt etc.
