Does anyone know if the regulation stopping private schools collecting deposits has had any implications with the international schools here yet?

Chatsworth sent the letter home yesterday saying deposits will be returned over the next 4 months on staggered basis. However they will now be requiring more upfront fees and an earlier date of confirmation that children will continue with the next semester. They also will be adding additional medical insurance and fee protection insurance to the existing fees as these are now also required by new legislation.

You mention an increase in fees but I wonder how the new act will affect the non-refundable portion of these fees:

"No registered PEI shall require a student to pay any deposit or penalty by whatever name called and whether refundable or otherwise, in relation to any course, other than a charge for late payment of the course fee."

but the letter we got from our school said it was a new law that private schools couldn't take a deposit any more.  Check the MOE or the CPE (council for private education) websites.  There's another discussion about this on the thread entitled 'parents are international schools deteriorating' where you might find out more info.

I wonder of the above means that schools with long aiting lists (notably TTS and UWC) should return the moneys paid upfront to be put on their infernal waiting lists.  Oh I hated signing those cheques  Angry

This is regarding the Indian International schools, I don't wish to name the school because of their policy of allergic to social media. The deposit is $2500 refundable, and it is a very large school with thousands of students and 3 branches and most well connected. This is not defamatory but just the truth you can verify.

if you made the deposit prior to the new law (December 2009) it remains a legal deposit.  Only new admissions after that date cannot be required to pay a deposit.
