Guido, your story is scary and unfortunately many maids are indeed into scams especially the filippino ones . There are also good ones, hard working and genuinely honest.
I have seen countless of women shopping with their maids, believe or not, the maid actually ordering "her madam" to take this, buy that, as if they were two buddies out on a shoppping spree... Ridiculous.
Too many expats in Singapore come from poor backgrounds, and sudddenly are offered an oppportunity to work overseas. The lifestyle goes from dark small apt. in the suburbs to nice villa with amenities.. Wao! we can have a maid! Wao we can have a car...etc....
So not having any experience they go from an extreme (cruel and stupid behaviour) to another (complete laissez faire)
Obviously the filippina maid immediately senses that and will take every single opportunity to abuse that type of expat.
In Manila a maid is paid 38 to 57 USD a MONTH!!! secretaries are paid 200 USD a month. Managers are paid 300 to 400 USD a month.
So when you give your maid 300 to 500 SGD a month ( tax free money) she is paid almost like a company manager !
These women are here to perform a job on their own free will and because they know they will make a **** load of money..
Just don't trust too much your maid and know how to keep your distances. Their job is to clean, cook, and obey orders. If you want them to be part of your family, be prepared to also know how to handle them.
Finally, I have a maid, I am single. She wears a uniform, and has been with me for 10 years. She does not say one word that is out of place. She appears adn disappears discreetely and knows how to pour wine and serve properly at the table.
When I bring to my house a girl, she knows how to pay her and show her the door.
She is Burmese by the way...
