What do the bankers amongst you think of Banco Santander as a safe place for deposits? On the one hand they are supposed to be one of the very few big banks that survived the crash, on the other hand, they are a Spanish bank and Spain economy is one of the shaky "Club Med" ones.
I find the rates they offer on some of their deposits quite tempting but aren't good rates offered by a bank indicative of trouble ahead?

ask a banker for an honest answer?
Questions I would ask are
1) which country is the account in
2) what insurance does the country provide against deposits.
3) if it goes tits up, how long will it take to get your insured deposit.
4) can you believe the insurer wont collapse
