I "need" small paper bags for keeping food in such as mushrooms and potatoes.  I can't find them anywhere.  I have asked and looked at supermarkets, stationery shops, wet markets, those really odd shops in the heartlands - can't get them anywhere (though to be honest, I don't think the lovely aunty in the heartlands knew what I was getting so worked up about).

Please can someone point me in the right direction.  Plastic is just ruins food and wrapping everything in paper towels is getting really expensive.

I've seen brown paper sandwich bags somewhere - I can't remember where but it must have been one of the supermarkets (Giant, NTUC or Cold Storage).  They were with all the ziplock bags and things.  I'm sure you can still get them, I'll have a look next time I'm in the supermarket and if I see them again I'll post back here.

They are the sort that kids write lunch orders on, so maybe the schools sell them.

I just saw brown food wrapping paper in Giant at Tamppines (near the insulated freezer bags), maybe you could adapt?

Alternatively, I make a point of saving the brown paper bags that Starbucks etc put take away in to ripen my avocados.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I have tried all the supermarkets and I can only find kids lunch bags - but these are actually some type of waxed paper.  They aren't as bad as plastic but they don't work.

Tried spotlight but they didn't have any - will try again as this is the sort of thing they should carry in their craft section.  I did ask but they just said 'no'.  I.e couldn't be bothered to find out for me.

Don't go to starbucks but I understand where you are coming from.  The problem is, no one seems to give you anything in a small paper bag anymore!

I will check out the food wrapping paper at Giant - I might have to learn to make my own.

Oh and I also tried that famous kitchen supply shop but they only had waxed (again) with one side cellophane that you put large loaves of bread in.

They must be out there somewhere. I refuse to give up now  Angry

Take a walk around China town or Bras Basah.

Try the art or party places. If they don't have, ask. They will have the suppliers contacts. You might need to order a 100 odd though.

I seem to remember seeing re-usable cloth bags for potatoes, mushrooms etc - probably Lakeland? You could look online?

I am 65. For the last 35+ years I have used COTTON BAGS made from cheap plain cotton bought by the yard, to store vegetables and the like. I use white as they  remain spotless after washing with a little bleach and detergent every now and then. The cotton absorbs all the moisture and my green local vegetables keep really fresh up to one week. After that, I may have to discard some leaves. Mushrooms keep REALLY well and dry. I made the last batch of cotton bags 12 years ago and they are still good.

There is a storage shop in Parkway Parade in the basement.  They sell cotton bags for potatoes and mushrooms.

It may not be the exact same kind as what you need but the party suplly stores for sure carry paper bags of different sizes.  It will more than likely have the handles on them but I am pretty sure they have some which are not waxed on one side.

There are 3 party supply stores on Queen St cor Middle Road. Art friend in Bras Basah complex is about 2 blocks from there as well.

This is something I find odd about Singapore, things like this are imposible to find but in 2 other Asian countries that I have lived in (including KL) these were readily available at the expat supermarket (yes Cold Storage and the supermarket in Ampang and my local one up the road in Ukay Heights) but cannot find anywhere in Singapore Sad

Many thanks for the replies.  I think I will try the cotton ones.  Long term, it has to be better for the environment I guess.
