I have just bought a bag of organic popcorn. It is in a plastic bag with no instructions. Anyone have any idea how I can POP it in the microwave. I know, I know, stop being anal and next time buy the box stuff with all the hydrogenated oil and cane syrup that comes in a packet for my poor kids

Do it on the stove top! Get a large crock pot and pour in a layer of popcorn and just enough canola oil to cover all kernels. Shake to evenly distribute kernels and oil.
Cover with glass lid. Over low heat, shake every few minutes till kernels start popping. Keep shaking to evenly distribute kernels. Turn off heat when popping slows or stops. Add salt and eat.

agree with that, you have to do it on the top. I like my popcorn sweet though. So, I add a bit of sugar (couple of teaspoons to a dessert spoon) to the oil and corn just before I think it's starting to pop (3 or 4 mins after the heat's on at a guess?). Add it too early and the sugar burns, add it too late and the sugar doesn't melt and the popcorn leaps out at you if you try and get the sugar in! Easier than it sounds, but it is yummy. Just the right faint trace of sweetness.
Oh, and put the pan straight into wash before it cools.

I usually throw in a couple of corns at the beginning, when they pop the temp. is just right and you can add the rest of the corn.

If you want it air popped and healthier, just pour the corn kernels into a brown paper bag (such as a lunch bag) and scrunch the top leaving plenty of air inside. Then m/wave for two minutes and the bag will fill with hot popped corn. You can then pour over melted butter/salt if you wish.

Agree with PP on the paper bag. Less clean-up than the stovetop method. You can throw in any topping you want afterward. For healthier alternate to butter, we sometimes use olive oil. Or, instead of salt, you can sprinkle in some grated parmesan cheese for flavor.
Of course, then that still leaves you with that nagging question of where to buy paper bags (see prior thread on this forum)!

To make it in a microwave, just put a few tablespoons of water in a large bowl, add the popcorn so it is about 1 or 2 kernels deep, and then cover the bowl with clingfilm. Make 2 or 3 slits in the clingfilm with a knife to let the steam out.
Place in microwave, and set it to 2 minutes. Repeat if necessary until the corn starts popping. Do keep an eye on it. Once the corn has popped, take it out, and carefully remove clingfilm (make sure the corn has stopped popping first!)),
Add sugar or salt and enjoy.
PS This way has less calories if you're looking for a low calorie snack (minus the sugar that is!)

The boxed stuff tastes awful and doesn't have that same 'bite' as the kernels you pop yourself. I don't know why.
