Strange, I've never flown in the last few years without an X-ray machine at the gate. And a few of those flights were Jetstar. Which would make sense because you CAN buy a lot of the things that are banned on aircraft carry-on baggage. At Bangkok, I was even made to take a newly-purchased 50ml pot of moisturiser out of its shop-sealed ziploc and then out of its box - luckily I had a small spare ziploc otherwise they were going to confiscate it!

There is a very simple solution to all this airport and airplane security.

They are already trialing it somewhere.....

Hope that SQ introduces it.  Certainly seems to make the passengers happy.

At the end of the day security measures in most ariports, expecially in Asia are a joke and only serve to irritate the traveling public and not enhance their security;

- in Taiwan and parts of China computers are not required to be removed from computer bags  (sensible) but in other countries are.

- I have now got to the point where I don't separate anything (liquids, gels and laptop) and just put it all through. In Changi they only catch it about 50% of the time!

- They are so anal in Changi now. Before you go through the Xray machine, they check your passport and boarding pass and then when through and at the gate (all of 30 seconds later) they chack it again. Now this is because they allowed some guy to get on a plane with his brothers passport but why should we be made to suffer for their incompetence.

- the check system still doesn't work as I stupidly got seated on a flight to what I thought was Sydney only to find out I was on a Melbourne plane when I found someone in "my seat"

The point I am making is that all of the security checks are more for show and internal satisfaction rather than to achieve any measure of effectiveness in security

My son is on holiday here in Singapore having flown out of the UK via Heathrow airport on a SIA flight.

Heathrow has a security system which requires a closer search of every 100th passenger. Strangely it does not target any ethnic groups or pay any attention to passenger history or previous countries visited or body language etc. This would be too complicated and anyway is too politically correct for UK.  Huh

So my son was the 100th passenger and they gave him an "invasive" search in full view of other passengers. He idly enquired if they had "a room for this sort of thing" but they did not.

They found nothing. Not even the 6-inch Brigade blade he had carelessly overlooked in his bag!
