Added protection, in the UK at least, leaseholders have the legal right to purchase the freehold.

Really scraping the bottom of the barrel there. When referring to "consumer protection" that's not what "stop saying this" (you?) was referring to and you and you know it. Expiry of condo leases is not current issue, because none of them have expired yet  Roll Eyes

No it isn't but there are issues still.

Some places are coming to the point where, even with 60 years left, banks won't lend.

May not be an issue here (don't know if I am honest) but for maintenance the freehold owner pays his mate to paint stuff up and the leaseholders get stiffed as they have no input on contractors so inflated rates.

No argument here. The owners who have held on to older lease hold properties will be in deep sh!t in the years to come.

But its caveat emptor. Pleading ignorance of the law or stupidity provides no relief in the West either.

Ignorance is never a legal defence with the single exception of signing a will.

UK has other protection as well, eg LL doesn't hold tenants deposits directly.

Anyway, yes, caveat emptor but buyer should be beware not raped.

Thus since the "consumers" you (?) were referring to in the earlier post are the "landlords", Singapore in fact protects the consumer by allowing them to rape tenants at will due to the complete absence of landlord and tenant laws  Grin

"Anyway, yes, caveat emptor but buyer should be beware not raped."

Ain't it the truth. I'm going to put this in my sig.
