I visited Qingdao 10 years ago when the PRC had purchased a de-commisioned aircraft carrier from Russia and they were dismantling it piece by piece to study the technology.

Australia scrapped theirs too and sold it to China for scrap as well. It wasn't scrapped that quickly.

If it is the press that is doing the scaremongering, at least it is defensible. But it is the US government that is doing the scaremongering which shows its hypocrisy.

How exactly is it scare mongering reporting on a countries military? Do you really think China doesn't have the same reports?

Remember the Cuban crisis during the good old Russian days?

What would the US do if China set up military bases in Cuba or the Bahamas?  Yet this is exactly what the US had been doing over the decades - they have bases in Japan and Korea.  And becoming deliberately provocative by holding exercises in the Yellow Sea.

So, what is sauce for the gander is not sauce for the goose?

The US are in these places for strategic reasons. The majority of these countries governments would have agreed for their presence to be there. These bases have been stages for numerous humanitarian projects as well. They have been a stabilizing force.

Would a Chinese base in the Bahamas or Cuba be stabilizing?

You fail to note China can be fairly provocative as well.

You made a song and dance about the submarine base in Hainan, which is within its own territory. And yet you are silent on the US bases around the world, especially those in Japan and Korea which are provocatively close to China.

Yes, by your reckoning, China is being provocative by building its submarine base in Hainan and thinking of building aircraft carriers.
