Hi all, looking for any recommendations on good Korean food.  So far, all the feedback has been that Sing has none worth mentioning.  I've been frequenting Kim Dae Mun Korean food in the basement food court of the Concorde Hotel.  It's respectable, some dishes authentic while the others fail miserably.  Any suggestions?

First suggestion is don't go to foodcourts.

The one at the Amara Hotel is good.

There are several on Tanjoing Pagar road, run by Koreans, with Korean customers.  Always a good sign.

On West Coast Highway, just as it splits away from Pasir Panjang Road, there is a big neon sign saying Korean BBQ on the left hand side (as you are facing West).  It is near the West Coast Car Mart (diagonally the other side of the road).  I am told by a guy who is married to a Korean that the food is excellent there and they go often (though they don't live nearby).

May be worth a try.

There are several Korean restaurants, korean supermarket and boutiques at Novena Square. I like Seoul Yummy for the good food, excellent service and reasonable prices.

Never got into Korean food, but am willing to be reeducated

Is their anything other than spicy cabbage? What would be a non kimchee recomended dish to try?

Try these - pretty safe. The 'pickled cabbage' is part of the kimchi range (acoompnaying appetiser side dishes)

1) bul-gol-gi (basically beef and veggies on rice, somewhat akin to Japanese teriyaki)

2) jap-chae (potato noodles)

3) gal-bi (bbq beef ribs)

4) lots of soupy stews to try out too

The list above is good.  Also, try 'Jeon', a pancakce like dish that can have seafood, onions and other stuff in it.  With a nice sauce.

Lots of good rice and noodle dishes, of course.

Some dishes are served with several side dishes/condiments so be conservatives when ordering or you may end up with much more than you can finish.

watched a programme recently. Apparently it does beat japanese food and is good for fighting cancer. The meal contains 5 colours of veg and some meat/fish/seafood. Carrots, turnip, lettuce, cabbage and red veg. Apparently you wrap the lettuce with meat and eat. Everything is finely cut.
The kimchi is cabbage marinated in salt and spices, vinegar and let to rot? for 4 months. How true is this? Meant to be good as its macrobiotic, has good bacteria for your gut.
I need to find a good korean restaurant too.......

Since the topic has come up here..
I concur with Jeon… There are several Korean restaurants in Tanjung Pajar along Tanjung Pagar road.
At lunch time many are packed with mostly Koreans so I guess must be reasonably good.
There is also a reputed (but expensive) place in Demsey that is highly recomended by Koreans
I used to live in Korea for 6 years and my favorite lunchtime food and snack is Gimbap…
Can’t find it here. I have asked all the Korean restaurants around Tanjung Pagar (that’s close to where my office is) but they serve everything but Gimbap.

Can somebody help me? Anyone knows a place where I can get Gimbap?
Thanks

Kim Bab, that's a tough one. I don't think I have seen it around either, and it's not really a 'restaurant' type' dish. Tried a few, and don't recall many restaurants selling Duk-Bol-ki either (the spice rice rolls with fish cake and boiled egg)

If you can't find kim-bab in Novena Square (which carries quite a bit of Korean food including the sweet honey rice cakes dessert Gul-Duk?), you may want to try asking the Koreans themselves.

Often Kimbab can be found pre-packed in Korean grocery stores based elsewhere (ie not in SG).

I have heard there is a Korean grocery (which may/may not carry your Kim-bab) near the dodgy Sim Lim Sq area too, but have never been myself.

There's a good Korean family restaurant in Circular Road, next to Boat Quay, about 35 Circular Road. The food's authentic.
Another is a larger restaurant next to Harbour Drive, PSA Vista.

If you're going to be here for awhile, there's a website for Koreans living in Singapore hankookchon

There is a place that has Kimbap on Tanjong Katong near Smith's - haven't tried it though, just saw the menu. There's a good galbi place at Far East Square near Raffles Place. Otherwise, Tanjong Pagar has a bunch of smaller places which others here have recommended. Food courts cater to more local tastes so the jigae isn't as spicy and is oddly a bit sweet.

Kim Bap can be found at the nice Korean restaurant at the Amara Hotel, I believe.

There are more Korean places along Tanjong Pagar than there were even one year ago, it's the place for Korean food in SG.  Lots of good places.
