Can anyone recommend a child-friendly resort in the Batu Ferringhi area? Planning a long weekend there with kids and a visitor. Thank you!

Either shangri-la resort (next to each other and cross signing).

Thank you but we are looking for something cheaper than Shangri La. I have read good things about Parkroyal Penang and rates are very reasonable - has anyone been?

Batu Feringhi is really dire and the hotels are overpriced. Park Royal was average 15 years ago and has deteriorated since. Yeah go to BF if you like the grotiness of the Pasar Malam.
Why not try the Paradise Sandy Bay or the one next door to it which has been recently refurbed.
Much better value, closer to town, close to the airport, nice beach, nicer restaurants close by etc etc

If Batu Feringhi is really dire, is there anywhere else on Penang's beaches?

The market is a bit crap unless you really have a dire need for a green laser. There are some decent stalls but pretty thin.
To be honest the beaches are all crap (including ferringhi which is average at best and loads of jellyfish).
Unless you are going to see the colonial areas and clan houses and want a beach holiday, look elsewhere, Asia is hardly short on this.
Sounds negative but went last year and really enjoyed it but beach chillout was never the plan. Btw the cheaper shang resort has a fantastic kids play thing.
Another point, other than jellys the sea is dangerous anyway, huge numbers of jet skis and power boats.

Thanks to all for their comments - booked a hotel in BT after all. Been to Malaysia many times including Penang so know what to expect in terms of the beaches, service, hotels, etc. But it is a request from our visitor to see Penang for nostalgic/historical/cultural reasons so we are happy to just go for a few days. We chose the beach area knowing the waters will not be less than impressive but overall will still provide a more relaxing environment than a city hotel.
But just to answer "so where", if you really want nice beaches in Malaysia, the ones with crystal clear waters would be places like Pulau Perhentien. But I went there many years ago and the accommodation was less than basic. Maybe things have changed and while I had a great time I wouldn't be rushing back there with kids until basic things like 24/7 running water is sorted out!
