Hi all

Anyone know where I can buy unsmoked bacon in Singapore? Hate smoked bacon but can't find unsmoked. Tried all the big supermarket chains, and some of the more exclusive ones (like the ones in Tanglin Mall, Raffles City etc. but with no luck

Any help would be great!

Regards
Chris

A man after my own sandwich, and a question I raised a few years ago. (hence the name!) People will tell you you can get it in CS etc but you can't. The Brazilian butcher next to subway in GWC said he would make some especially for me but I think he quoted some horrendous price, however you can always ask again as this was a few years ago. Other than that you just need to enquire in all the specialist butchers. Good luck and please let me know if you find anything.

I've lived here nearly a decade and never found unsmoked bacon despite people telling me you could get it here there and everywhere.  One place I never tried which was mentioned once was Tierneys which is around Farrer Road somewhere I think so if you live anywhere near there, you could give them a try but I have tried their sausages (which you can buy in some branches of Cold Storage) and they're all smoked so I'm doubtful that they'd do unsmoked bacon.

You can however bring meat into Singapore so next time you go home or have visitors, you could get them to bring you some.  I've got a relative coming for Christmas and she's got a list of things like bacon, pork pies and sausage rolls..........it'll be a good Christmas, but probably a bit of an unhealthy one  Smiley

It's available at Cold Storage deli counters, and I've also bought it at NTUC Fairprice.

I asked at Cold Storage for smoked bacon recently and the sales assistant told me they didn't have any and never had it before.I queried that because I bought it before.  She then asked the manager and his reply was that all bacon sold in Cold Storage was smoked, he reckoned they were not allowed to import unsmoked bacon.
Tierney's seems to have closed down. Not sure if it's just for renovation or for good or moved somewhere else.

At Tanglin Market Place, they have a french bacon in the deli section that is sold as lightly salted.  I find this the closest to unsmoked that I can find.  It also does not have a lot of the cr@p in it.  It's not unsmoked but a pretty close alternative.

Tierneys have gone - the rent just got too high (damn it!).

Yep, it's definitely available at NTUC Fairprice. I can't remember the brand, but it comes in an orange-y red packet.

It's not unsmoked. It's maple cured which is even nastier.

Yes looked all over and it is all smoked or cured
there is a low salt thicker cut bacon in CS at the counter but there has not been any available for a while
that is the nearest you will get here unless you can speak to the specialist butchers who maybe able to order it for you

Not in our local ones it isn't - I've asked and they said they don't do smoked bacon.  One is a Fairprice Finest and one is just the old style Fairprice.  I honestly don't think it's available, but what I think can happen is that people become more used to smoked bacon as a result of living here for so long and they perhaps sometimes think it's unsmoked if it is less strong in taste.

I used to really dislike smoked bacon, I'm used to it now but I still buy unsmoked whenever I go home.

I think Tierney's is gone - it closed about a month or so ago...
If they have moved I'd love to know where!

I've also been able to get unsmoked intermittently at Fairprice...not great quality, but it's definitely not smoked.
