Does anyone know if I can get comprehensive health insurance for my helper?  The standard maid insurance is very basic and will not suffice should anything go wrong.  I cannot get additional insurance through the maid agencies.  Perhaps overseas?
Thanks for all help!

As far as I'm aware, no further insurance is available.  And a friend of mine is still paying off a $40K+ hospital bill after her maid got really sick and her insurance covered next to nothing, which is quite scary.  But she, as did other friends, looked into further insurance and found nothing at all.

Try NTUC - we got more comprehensive insurance for our maid through them.  Not fully comprehensive but not the pathetic minimum.  Also found NTUC very helpful and they always send me an e-mail to remind me that my maid contract is up for renewal etc.  Have used them for 6 years.

Thanks for your responses.  I too have two friends who are paying off helper medical bills 1) $120,000 2) 59,000.  It's a very big risk and one we don't take with ourselves.  Even NTUC's policy is very limited (further limited I understand by separating out coverage by per occasion/per year). I may look into coverage from the PH.  I can't understand why there is no insurance coverage for this group of people, who we rely so heavily upon.

This may sound harsh but why are they paying this?

As background we have paid numerous things beyond insurance. However my maid in my employee not my child, if she needs heart surgery then sorry, her problem.  I'd likely help but probably not here, paying over 100k, sorry, no. If it happened to you and insurance didn't cover would your employer pony up, doubt it. You hired her, I'm assuming you didn't adopt her.

You are a dick, and should not be allowed to employ a pet, let alone a maid.

he's not a dick, he's just saying it how it is in the real world.

You are the one being touched up,but if it makes you feel superior, or saintly, you do it. Just don't criticise those who live in the real world.

give us more info on this 120k medical bill.  recently there was an article about a maid who gave birth prematurely and then her baby had 8 weeks of additional care and the bill came to 60k.  What the heck comes to 120k that you are liable for?

I'm not mean, but i agree, you are not legally responsible for anything that's not accidental and above the insurance policy - or are you?  I think the NTUC med care is 15k per incident.

agree with the posters who would not pay.  If there was something really serious she would have to sent back to her home country and get the work done there for a fraction of what it is here.  Maybe not the same level of care surely, but like someone said you did not adopt your maid and she is not a charity case.   What the heck costs 120K?

Well hopefully insurance would cover it. If not then I expect most would pay, especially if she was working at the time.

If she got drunk and it was self inflicted on an off day then probably less sympathetic.

You are obviously a prime example as to why training courses have been introduced before you are allowed to hire maids.  You maybe ought to figure out the difference between an employee and a family member.
