Some time back, there was a thread (or some threads) on how crime statistics in Singapore were manipulated and that serious crimes (specifically murders) were under-reported. Kubes et al claimed that the murder rate in Singapore is very high, but fudged.  Well, here are the murders by numbers, for what they are worth.

Kubes, Australia made it to World Top 50 ranking. Wow, good job Australia - way to go.
Now, where the hell is Singapore - can't even make it into the list. What gives?

Ah ha, there you are - Singapore ranked poorly - way at the bottom of the list:

Average for Australia for the period was 1.38 per 100,000
Average for Singapore for the period was 0.54 per 100,000

Australia out-gunned Singapore by 155% - good job Kubes.

Grapes:  I think the red haze is interfering with your memory.  The misleading statistics that SG uses to it's benefit that I highlighted was in regard to road fatality rates, which are actually about 7-8 times the average of the developed world.

Unless the red wine is affecting my memory, I am pretty sure I did not comment on SG's non-Govt sponsored murder rates vs other countries.  Go ahead and find my posts please.   Interestingly if you add in the 80 or so the official Govt killings per year, what does the SG murder rate look like and rank like?  Murder is murder right?

Ah ha, there you are - Singapore ranked poorly - way at the bottom of the list:

Average for Australia for the period was 1.38 per 100,000
Average for Singapore for the period was 0.54 per 100,000

Australia out-gunned Singapore by 155% - good job Kubes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_homicide_rate

Just noticed you provided the ratios for SG and AU.  Thanks.

So with these data points:  5 million population (very generous as it has grown a lot during that period) and an average of 80 official murders per annum gives us a murder rate of: 2.14 for Singapore.  With the actual population data the ratio would be higher, but you get the picture.

The stats I could find on road fatalities show Singapore at around 4.8 per 100,000 which rank it near Sweden and Switzerland as one of the safest countries in the world.  Qatar scores at 23.7 and France at 6.9, for example.   Perhaps it isn't Grape's memory that is at fault but a faulty claim about fatalities?

The problem is that it is isn't very straight forward to compare country with country in this case. In general people drive car much more in other countries due to well, being bigger. A more fair comparison would be fatalities per distance traveled.

A good point - a mate in Aus last week drove 1100 km round trip in a day to see a client.  I would not do that distance in two months in Singapore.

The other telling part of this is that many countries listed here have excluded attempts.  This would put both Aus and Sing further down the list.

Unless the red wine is affecting my memory - yes, the wrath of grapes has this effect, and then tomorrow you will get a hangover.

Singapore seems a safe place.  Well, I hope so, it's the size of my county in the US and has about 5000 more police on the job!  But it's also due to a generally law abiding population, too.

However, the fact that this list omits Brazil does bring its veracity into question, does it not?  I also don't see China anywhere.

You make a claim not supported by any data.  Then you are shown the data that contradicts your statement.  And now you want to suggest the data is not valid.  But, basically, you have no data to support your original claim.

You may be correct in that improved data MAY report a different result but it also MAY NOT.  There seems to be no evidence available to suggest that Singapore roads or driving in Singapore is "unsafe" compared to other countries.  And there is reason to believe it is, in fact, safer than most.

The road here are in good condition and the road markings are reasonably clear.
There is no ice, falling rock, etc to provide additional hazards
Drivers must pass an exam to be issued a license

These factors are not at work in many other countries in the region and around the world.  While I'd happy complain about the general lack of courtesy the only concern I have here about safety is for the motorcyclists.   I see no reason to make spurious claims without supporting data.

Your claim of 4.5 fatalities of 100,000 where didn't even specify what the unit of the '100,000' was and didn't even bother telling the source was of course much better.

Here's some facts:

Total km road in Singapore is 3,356 km
Total km road in Sweden is 572,900 km

Sweden has an area of around 450,000 km2
Singapore has an area of 710 km2

Sweden has a pop density of 20/km2
Singapore has 7022/km2

Sweden has 4.4 million cars, Singapore has not 450,000

Now do you still think that based on your number that both countries are about as safe in traffic?

Didn't we already have this discussion?  By the way, did you know that about 60 taxis get into accidents every day here?
