Over the Chinese New Year I was away in China, and left my bicycle (Trek Hybrid, 7.3FX one year old) chained in the bicycle storage area at my condo (Costa Del Sol). This morning woke up for my cycle to work only to discover the bike had had disappeared - cue my Kevin Bloody Wilson, "where's me effin bike". Security guards did not seem too disturbed - I don't have any contents insurance so don't really see the point in reporting it to the Feds.
Anyway moral of the story - be careful where you leave your bike!

pp,
I am sorry to hear about your bike.
Unfortunately this kind of thing happens here (as it does in any city of any size in the World).
May I suggest the following for going forward:
*Buy an old piece of crap bike...chance of that getting stolen are less *If you buy another 'nice' bike, either invest in multiple top-quality locks and use them, OR *Keep your bike inside your place

Please do reconsider about making a police report. Who knows, maybe other things have been stolen at your condo. Not reporting it may embolden the thief to steal even more stuff. At least with a record of previous thefts, if the culprit is eventually caught, the authorities will have several thefts to consider when charging him. I suppose there is no CCTV at the premises?

Forgot to say, you should inform the head of the security for your condo also. He may be less of a drongo than the guards you spoke to and may light a fire under the rear ends of all the guards there, which may make them more vigilant. Can only be good thing.

do it.
the police might have access to 'hot stuff' and who knows (miracle long shot) ... one day it just might show up on the radar.
if you just do nothing ... then you get no chance in hell.

i lived at Costa Del Sol about 5 years back. Had parts of my bike stolen there. Headlight and seat taken. Of course security was useless as it always is.

I've heard that a lot of stolen bikes can be found in the flea market on Kelantan (sp?) Lane . Sorry but I don't know what days or the time.

I thought that the police only reported bicycles as missing, never stolen.

Security didn't seem too disturbed because it was probably one of them who nicked it! Either that or someone else who works there. Even more sinister - perhaps they even knew it was your bike and that you'd gone away I assume CostaDS has a management office - report it to them and to the feds.

I had my bike stolen a couple of years ago and when i reported it to the police, they said they suspected a guy living 3 floors above me. I never heard back from the cops, but yeah, they sometimes know the bad guys in yor naeighbourhood
As for locking up your bike, get a U bar lock- the type they use for motorbikes. The Straits paper did an article on how easy it was to cut chains after some Caucasian guy was riding around the world, but got his bike pinched in front of Ngee Ann City last year.
Pretty much all chains- wire, steel linked chains, all can be cut in between 5 to 75 seconds.
Onlt the U bar type can't be cut, unless you get a hacksaw and stand there for half an hour.....

i've seen the CCTV footage of the w@@#$$% pinching my bike-he cut through a decent lock in about 10 s. i've now bought a U lock. by the way the police are totally disinterested that i think i know the construction worker who pinched my bike...i've called about 15 times and they never get back to me...not sure that a police report is worth it, bit disillusioned really...

I remember a few years ago when a colleague has his bike stole from our office car park. He asked the building management if they had CCTV covering the bike storage area. They said that no the cameras only covered the entrance, but that they could confirm that he cycled in and walked out

I also had my bike stolen from my Condo a couple of years back (An Ironhorse Hollowpoint worth about 4 grand), it was only a few days after the security guards had insisted that I had to store my bike in the bike racks rather than bringing it into my apartment. (makes me even more suspicious thinking back on it). The thief had cut the lock and put another bike under the dust cover I was using, so it was a couple of weeks before I noticed the theft. I did report it to the Police as I did have contents insurance. The Police showed up very quickly and spent time dusting for fingerprints etc, which I thought was quite immpressive/funny. The insurance company managed to deny my claim anyway due to some fine print stating that any one claim can not be more than 5% of the sum insured, unles it is AV equipment or a Piano... I was gutted.
