I recently bought an air popping popcorn maker which is great, the only trouble is that the popcorn is tasteless because of the lack of oil used.  We're trying to keep the fat content down in our house so have tried shaking the popcorn in a bag with a teaspoon of sugar, but because there's no fat, the sugar doesn't stick to it  Undecided

Does anyone have any ideas for being able to get that buttery taste but without the fat content?  In the USA they have loads of those spray-on/shake-on toppings with varying fat content but I've never seen them here - has anyone else ever seen them?

Any other ideas for tasty toppings with low-fat would be greatly appreciated   Smiley

You could melt some cheese on while it is still hot.  To make it sweet you would have to make a caramel sauce perhaps ie butter/sugar melted but it is a lot of fuss. Try icing sugar perhaps as it is powdery.  I know what you mean as I like buttery popcorn.

Thanks ex-pat.  I've bought this crisco butter spray stuff and that's helping - at least the sugar kind of sticks now and it tastes a bit buttery - it's not great but it's better than nothing.  I might try your suggestion of icing sugar though; as it's lighter it might stick better.

Use a little butter - why deny yourselves? It's still a healthy snack, and if you're eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet you're ahead.

Go for it!

I'm sorry, but this is just too funny. You get an air popper to be more healthy (good on you) and then use Crisco!!!!!  Use butter, if you must, but throw that spray cr@p away.

ha ha, true, but I didn't buy the air popper purely because it was an air-popper and I wanted to be healthy at first, I bought it because it was only $39.99 in Cold Storage and I get fed up of washing 'popcorn pans'.

The spray oils are supposed to be better than using normal oil......or so they say.  1 or 2 squirts of the spray oil v 1 or 2 tablespoons of oil popped popcorn.  I'm not an expert but the spray has to be better surely.

Anyway, the kids don't like the spray they say it sucks (their words, not mine), so I might just go back to putting some butter on there........sigh - more washing up.

You know you don't need an air popper...you place the corn in a brown paper bag and scrunch the top and microwave for a couple of minutes... the heat pops the corn same principle as the machine and you can even eat it out of the paper bag, so no bowls to wash!

Smiley  Agree on the fuss free paper bag method , I'm using the popcorn bag bought from Cold Stoage . There are salt, butter, caramel flavours around $9 for 3  bags.  Little mess, you just place the paper bag in the microwave and ding for 1 - 11/2 minutes.  Take care to watch carefully the first time to assess the power of your machine to avoid burnt popcorn.

Oh, yes, don't try like I did to re-micro wave the un-popped kernels by resealing them in the paper bag.  My buttery bag caught fire in the micro wave this weekend from the grease!  At least corn is healthier as a snack and full of fibre over chips/crisps
