it's some kind of crayfish/lobster, but I think some places just use prawns and call it scampi.  The French call them langoustines

You could have looked this up on google though and got your answer in about 20 seconds.

They are a very deep water ocean creature. They are halfway between a prawn and a lobster. In my opinion they taste nicer than both, very sweet flavor and fine texture. They are typically frozen immediately upon catching, so most of the time you buy them they will be frozen. Italians, French and Japanese eat them a lot in various dishes. They are found in various parts of the world. They go well with mango

Scampi are indigenous to British pubs where they are usually to be found in a basket, covered in breadcrumbs and accompanied by chips

They're found in the Atlantic and the Med, so anything you get elsewhere claiming to be 'local' scampi, is probably just prawns.

They're also found at Smith's chippy down Tanjong Katong Rd where they retail for the princely sum of $24 including chips   Smiley

Is it related to a yabby?

Only in the same way that a crisp Sauvignon Blanc is related to weasel piss strained through a sugar bag.
