Need some advice please. I need to get myself a microwave so I can start cooking my own food and cut down on the take aways. I've only ever had a normal microwave. Is it worth investing in a convection microwave? Or is a standard microwave or one with grill good enough for most cooking?

Besides cost, the only real drawback to a combined convection/microwave is oven size. Personally, I found the oven cavity of the combined units to be too small for much of the cooking I do. I don't think they compromise microwave capacity or performance, they're just a little limited in what they can do as a conventional/convection oven.

i have a large panasonic combination microwave / convection oven. I do have a normal oven too and I cook quite a lot. I tend to use the combi oven to avoid heating up the whole kitchen if I'm reheating a casserole or lasagne (not a common event in Singapore!) or cooking a frozen pizza. Or, I suppose if I need two different oven temps at the same time. I'd defintely replace it if it broke.

It sounds as though you don't do much cooking, so don't have an oven at all. If not, I'd definitely recommend you get one. Just get a decent sized one so you can get a baking tin or tray for pizzas in it. By large, I mean one that's 60-70cms across on the outside.
