Where your friends and relatives are!
Maybe more emphasis on friends, as you can choose your friends but not your relatives.
I do agree with following the seasons, personally I love England by the sea in the summer. Winter has to be in a village in the Swiss Alps. South-east asia is good choice for most of the year.
Perhaps a yacht or motor cruiser that you can relocate is the best answer.
Unfortunately money comes into the equation. so a country with a low cost of living can turn out to be the best.
I think many expatriates ask this question. I don't know anyone who has found the answer.

You sound like you are very jealous and envious of the Yanks. It is not their fault that the average man there can afford the 5 C's, live a good life and an even better retirement if they wanted to and planned properly. To aspire to get the gold plated toilet brush when you are 55 , well, the only place i have heard of that is singapore.

lots of people are jealous of america, whether it be the freedoms enjoyed, the amazing country, the people, the job opportunities, the skiing/beaches/wine country etc etc, face it alot of people given the chance would move there.

Rather than a list of countries some admin person in an office in Belgium comes up with, how about lising countries on the basis of where people would emigrate to given the chance ? A simple question is posed: if you had a choice of relocating to any country in the world which one would it be ? I think you'll find the list similar somewhat to the  quality of life listings, but you'll also find the US alot higher than it gets in any ranking system. People might enjoy crapping on Americans, but they would love to be one themself given the chance.

I'm British.  I would move to the US given the chance.  It would have to be the right part (I wouldn't want to live in Hicksville).  Many of my friends say they wouldn't live in the US but most of them haven't been there so they only know what they've seen on TV, or they base their opinions of Americans on the the brash tourists you see in the UK.  I have lived in the US and found the people to be lovely, and friendly.  One good point for Brits is that most Americans love us.  One thing that would put me off Australia (apart from the distance from Europe) is that many Australians don't like us.  I would rather live somewhere we are welcomed, not despised.

g question. Why do Americans like the brits, would gladly welcome the Brits on our soil but the Brits are preceived as to not like Americans? Don't worry, we can deal with it. Any Brits care to explain? Funny, the Irish are different.

That's my theory.  Speak with a British accent in the US and the locals automatically assume you're about 20 IQ points smarter than you actually are.

I would move to the Bay Area in a flash.

Really friendly people, great cultural diversity, great weather beautiful scenery, good cities and great restaurants. Like Sydney without the race riots!

I often get accused of being British when I am in America and people really do dig the accent. Only 2 weeks ago I had 20% slashed of my restaurant bill because the waitress thought my accent was cool.

Maybe they like the British because they are not a colony and have thousands of years of history and castles and stuff.

I guess NOT the UK ....

More than one in ten of the half a million Eastern Europeans who have flooded into Britain is claiming benefits, it emerged last night.

The migrants are still arriving at a rate of more than 655 every day, taking the total who have signed the Government's worker registration scheme to a staggering 510,000.

Of these, more than 55,0000 are in receipt of state handouts worth millions of pounds, despite promises that taxpayer-funded payouts would be kept to a bare minimum.

Ministers, rattled by warnings that schools and hospitals are unable to cope with the influx, had been desperately hoping the number of new arrivals would drop-off.

But figures published by the Home Office yesterday revealed the opposite is happening. Between July and September this year, 59,000 migrants poured into the UK - 3,000 more than in the previous three months. It is the equivalent 656 new arrivals every day.

The best place to live? If money is not a problem, try San Francisco.
