Never been to Bangkok so if anyone can recommend a hotel or at least a general area to concentrate on for my hotel search, it would be most appreciated.
What is the best way to get around the city? And to and from the airport?
I am flying into the Don Muang airport but leaving from the Suvarnabhumi airport.

If you get cabs, always make sure the driver has turned on the meter. They can rip you off if you don't do this............either that or agree a price first (but around the city it's cheaper to get them to turn the meter on.

We love the sukhumvit area. The sky train system is very efficient for getting around. Have only stayed at the Sheraton but a friend recommended the princess padthumwan hotel next to MBK shopping centre (a bit like sim lim). It is cheaper and close to shops etc. The sky train can take you to the weekend markets but the night markets are good you can get there by tuk tuk or taxi. There is a street market in sukhumvit at night also.

Agree with previous posters about staying close to the subways/trains. Sukhumvit is a convenient area. For hotels, check tripadvisor dot com for reviews; there are plenty of very good smaller hotels within your budget.

If you take a taxi in downtown Bangkok, be prepared to fight very hard for them to turn on the meter (try several taxis until one agrees!) or be willing to pay several times the actual price. Forget about ever taking a Tuk-Tuk, as they have no meters and charge even more. I can only recommend staying near and using mostly the MRT and BTS trains. The river boats are also good.

OP. USD $200 is a good budget. Have a bash at booking online on the various hotel websites. The major groups have several properties in Bangkok. Some PPs have mentioned the Sheraton. They go under the banner of the Starwood Hotel Group. Try there for starters. You should be able to get breakfast thrown in for good measure. Sometimes a quick call or email to the hotel reservations office directly can yield results and decent deals.
