How easy is it to get a block of land over here  I want to build my own 4x2 or similar and do most of the building work myself, site works, lay the slab & all the brickwork, using only local labour to finish the job.

Ok, I'll take the bait...

1) Foreigners cannot buy land
2) PR's can, but need special approval, this is not automatic.
3) 90% for the cost of a house here is for the land. The smallest plots are about 1300sqft and will currently cost you around $1.6-1.8M
4) If you buy a house as a PR you are not allowed to sell it for 3 years.
5) You are not allowed to rent it out either
6) Foreign workers to build your house are paid around $30/day. IS this all you value your time at.??

So in summary. Not easy at all  Grin

I am married to a local who can raise the cash easily.

I want to do the job myself of course hiringforeign labour to assist but under my supervision at all times.

I built my own place at home in WA and it went well. Would love to have a big aussie place here complete with patio & pool.

BIG aussie place here complete with patio & pool - why not? If you have $20 million to spare.

Mate, it would be much smarter (and cheaper) to build your dream Aussie home in Australia, rather than Singapore. Even if you can clear all the legal and financial hurdles, you have to consider the long term sales potential of a great Aussie home in SG.  Even if you could get it built, it would need to be in an upmarket location to attract future buyers (locals only). You would need a budget of $15-20M for the land in good area.  Building cost/materials would easily be 2-3 times those of AU.  There are no Bunnings here.

On the other hand, maybe you are trying to show off your building and design talents to the in-laws.  Think very carefully about that.  They won't value or even be able to appreciate your skills of the quality of the work and would be mortified to think their daughter's spouse is a manual laborer.  99% likelihood they only judge you as a person by the size of your salary - nothing else matters.

In SG the idea of people building things themselves is completely unknown.  That is why Ikea has to provide a flat-pack assembly service here.

For the price of land big enough to look like a big aussie place, you can buy acres upon acres of land down under.  Buy, don't build.

You will eventually get fed up and want to get the heck outta this place (local spouse or no local spouse). Suggest you invest all your time, money and energy on a property back home where you can retire after the scales have fallen from your eyes. I give you 15 years, max, before that happens. Could be sooner. If you are lucky.

Singapore is too small and eventually you will get sick of it. Give it 5 years and you'll be ready to move back home. I've managed to convince my wife to move back later this year. I sure hope you can do they same.

But is the missus migrate down under, it will be a win-win situation - both Singapore's and Australia' average IQ will go up.
