I have just interviewed for a 1 year contract position at a canadian bank (BO non IB). The offices are at Toronto and the position is a mid level one. I am expecting to get the role. Haven't yet discussed the salary details with the HR. Would like to hear first hand from any one with Canadian experience on the cost of living and other expenses in Canada.
To give some reference I currently make only S$6500 a month here and I spent around $4500 a month on rent, utilities, groceries, eating out and everything else. When I say eating out, it doesn't include fancy restaurants. To tell the truth, I do scrimp a lot to to keep my expense low. I'm looking out for a better standard of living. Taking into account that taxes will come to around 30%, a 8000 CAD salary will tran/slate to only 5600 CAD take home. How would this compare with my current singapore salary

Put it this way, CAD$5600 net is a big salary here in Montreal. Toronto is no different in that it's a big Canadian city. Cost of living is relative to where you live. Downtown Toronto, you can expect a rent around 2500 for a 2-bedroom apt for example.

You won't spend anywhere near as much as in a big Asian.

Hope his helps.

Almost of salary for an apartment - how much cheaper does it get a little way out of the centre?

I pay about 33% of salary for condo in Singapore and think its too high a %

Thanks for the info Nakeele. The offer I got was well short of my expectation of 8000 CAD. offer is still on the table, but I might choose to turn it downif negotiations don't reach anywhere.
