I like to have a drink after the children have gone to bed. Not every night but maybe 4/5 nights out of 7 I will have one. My husband seems to think this is a problem. It is only one drink - maybe 2 on a weekend.

You definitely have a problem. You're not drinking nearly enough.

It doesn't sound like a problem but I remember this was asked a while back and one answer was that if you think it is then it might be.  In your case it is your husband that thinks it is - you said that you don't think it is - it sounds like it is not for you.

However if you start craving it earlier and earlier (and subsequently putting the kids to bed at 4pm  Shocked) and wanting to get drunk every night, also where it starts affecting your behaviour the next day then you may need to rethink and ask yourself the question again.

In summary no I don't think you have a drink problem.  Just a wind down drink after the kids are in bed - seems reasonable  Wink

I do certainly look forward to it some nights, but it is usually after 9 and just the one. I can go weeks and it not bother me - did it recently on a bit of a diet around Feb/March.

Don't feel that my mood changes with or without it, I just enjoy it.
I'm worried because the more my husband says its a problem the more I feel I shouldn't do it the more I want to do it

An alcoholic is a person who can't control his/her drinking, sounds at the moment like you can control it but since alcohol is addictive it may cause you to increase your intake over time. Make sure you monitor that.

or to put it differently: the more you drink, the higher the probability that you get "hooked".

also if you have alcoholics in your family you should be extra careful.

I've never had a drink problem myself. I find it quite easy actually.

I'm not an alcoholic. Alcoholics go to meetings. I'm just a drunk.

When I was staying at home with my young children I would look forward to the first wine when they went to bed.  Kind of a reward for getting through the day!!  Same as you I would have only one or two glasses.  Sometimes I would pour it and not drink it .... but I enjoyed the routine and reward.

I do not think 10 +/- glasses of wine a week is a problem! I guess it depends on how big the glasses are!!

I remember having that sense of anticipation late afternoons of looking forward to getting comfortably numb after a few glasses of wine after dinner. It even turned into somewhat of a craving at some point.

Not sure what happened but I went off it some time after that, can't remember how it came about.

But now I haven't had a drink for about a year, never missed it. In fact, there's these 2 cans of beer in the kitchen cupboard, been there for yonks. I can't care less.

In short OP, it looks like it's just a phase you're going through, no worries.

probably depends more on how big you are.. women tend to take less alcohol due to less volume than men Smiley

Seriously, why do people even start?

It's alarming to see (back home) this very common weekend culture of people making a bee line to to liquor stores and walking out armed with 6 packs and bottles of wine. More so, when this is prevalent among teens and the 20-somethings that's it's cool to drink until you're wasted. Or that no weekend should be complete without a hangover.  Or to let kids try 'harmless' beer drinking while mum and dad are at it.

Occasional social drinking is one thing, making liquor such an important and necessary part of daily lifestyle ... is not and will never be my cup of tea.

I manage to get through a bottle of red wine 5 or 6 nights of the week at home as a way to relax after work. and i don't think i have a problem, its just a nice way to take it easy after a long day. i guess the only issue is the costs adds up, im spending about SGD 200 a week on wine at home plus the usual going out on the weekend, but i also get paid quite a bit so its certainly something i can afford. so really a glass or two a night is nothing to worry about at all.

And I beg to differ.
