My husband and I are keen to move to Singapore. We currently live in Germany.

We have quite a lot of holidays coming up and so staying in Singapore is not an issue (apart from the expense of staying in a hotel). Would it be easier to find work if we are staying in Singapore or is it just a question of posting the CV online and waiting for responses - in which case we may as well just stay here.

What did you do? assuming you were not transferred out there by your company...........

We are also not sure if it is worth applying for a PEP before job hunting. Or just applying for jobs in the hope that the employer will sponsor. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I sent my CV through company's websites and apply online from several job websites in Singapore.

I don't think your presence is required as I did all rounds of interview via video conference. Should any companies be interested , they 'll contact you and you may decide from there.

However, there are some people who go there to look for work and get one.

If money isn't your issue, I suggest you try both ways.

But personally, I was offered job when I was in my country. So I would recommend sending CV online first.

Hope this helps . Good luck!

Bit difficult to help and advise as you dont give any details of what jobs you want, what job sector your experience is in, what education you have and what salary you want.

Jobs are never easy to come by and it takes a lot of time and effort, and with another recession looming, the banks getting rid of people globally, the glut of educated experienced people from within ASEAN and the sub continent, you may want to look for alternatives.

Are you German? Ive worked in Germany before. I absolutely loved it. The Germans was kind and know how to relax and unwind. The worst country I have been to is UK, and yes I have been to Iraq as a consultant to some company...I guess that says something eh..

By all means: go there. If you're not there you don't exist for them.

The "prick" is you, dude.  East London is not the UK.  London sux, the UK does not.

And as for Germans being kind and knowing how to relax and unwind....well, that's obviously a troll throwing something out to get a reaction.

I am afraid that just posting your CV online will not get you anywhere, you will be joining thousands of other job seekers so your CVs will have a hard time getting noticed.

You need to do the "Vitamin B" (networking) approach in order to get a job. If your company has a local Singapore office - preferably with some German manager - then approach that fellow. Often they go home to their home country during summer holidays so with some luck you could get interviewed in Germany. You will then have a much higher probability of success because country men stick together. This is the way I got a job in Singapore, although not at a German company since I am not German but I reckon the same principle applies.

If you are not working for a company that has local Singapore representation I would instead suggest you try getting hooked up with head hunters using linkedin. I normally get lots of job offers from there in various places of the world but I guess it depends on your profile. If you have some odd profession/too little experience it may not help.

In job hunting networking is the single most important way to get a job, regardless whether it is abroad or at home

As a side note: once you get a job, other opportunities open up more easily so you can initially be a bit more flexible regarding salary etc. cynical, I know, but that is a possibility.

Have just gone through this process, in my experience it was far better to be here locally than from afar...but it may depend on the sector that you work in. The networking aspect is also true.

Hey I'm planning to come for 3 months too! to look for work. Do you think I should try to stay for 6 months or should I just focus on 3 for now? I have almost a year experience with HSBC and studied in SIM, Singapore. What do you think are my chances? I dont have much salary expectations since I know i'm still a relatively fresh graduate. I'm looking for jobs in the finance sector.

Are there many developed countries that allow foreigners into the country to look for jobs? I recall in the past when I went to the US, UK and Australia the immigration officials will ask what you are doing in the country and if you say you are there to look for a job they will send you back home.

How old are you? Which country are you from? What is your bachelors/masters degree?

This may not be a good time for finance grads or job seekers, as we are all preparing for global recession round 2!
