OK, so I'm a girl (well, a wee bit older than a girl technically) who's new to S'pore and is pretty damn keen on rugby. I'm looking for some friendly people hook up with to watch a game or two... Any one out there?

To any of the usual suspect bars wearing your team colours and bringing your typically friendly antipodean attitude and you'll have friends aplenty.

Ali did this approach work for you ever? Even the most naive "rugby doris" would be able to rely upon her inbuilt 'magnet' to track down those who should be hit upon.

Having said that, meet me behind the changing rooms at 4.30.

Hey all,

Sorry bit of a slow response to this - no one seemed to respond for days so I kind of assumed my cry for help had fallen on deaf ears, and sadly Cap'n S - I think I missed your generous offer of meeting behind the bike sheds! Ho hum, never mind hey. I've never heard of/been called a rugby doris before and was wondering if I should get on my high horse and be offended, but after consideration, really can't be bothered!

So - being not only new to this town, but also these forum things - what happens next? I'd love to get some people together for this week. Not sure where's good to watch, I've been to a couple of bars to watch games (including that HUGE Aussie place on one of the Quays?) that were fine. Any high recommendations - preferably places where you can actually hear/see!

I should let you all know that I am English - I hope this does not change anything. (Waits for the abuse to begin!)

Ali

I waited for fifteen minutes Ali, and then started without you.

The English thing's no problem at all. Come one come all is my policy. The thing about these forums is, you never really know who your talking to. Consequently the sort of information or attitude you project may queer your pitch at times.

You seem to be a genuine rugby fan, and a likeable sort given your follow-up post. I recommend  Boat Quay, rather than Clarke, or Robertson. There are a couple of well tested "Brit bars" on the frontage, an "Irish pub" around the back, as well as a smattering of antipodean offerings. Given that, I watched a recent game at an outdoor MBS bar. Atmosphere pleasant, staff funny (the good kind) and attentive, Australia won at a canter. I wouldn't recommend Muddy Murphy's to anyone but a bar-hardened pro. And Orchard is a humorless desert in the afternoons anyway.

If you find a rugby crowd, you'll find a friendly and educated crowd Ali. Support your team, adopt another, and enjoy the games.

The skipper got it right, head to Boat Quay to any of those "well tested "Brit bars" on the frontage, an "Irish pub" around the back, as well as a smattering of antipodean offerings."

You will find a pretty good crowd and fit right in nicely.

Brewerkz does a fine IPA but has about as much atmosphere as a cup of cold sick.

The room out the back with the big screen could liven up with the right crowd, but will they attract the right crowd? Most who go there to watch sport appear to have been lobotomised. Probably a better F1 venue than a rugby one.

Could be a good place to load up on a few cheap pints before finding somewhere with a heartbeat. The big, gout-ridden barman will see you right early in the day. A man of character in a sea of beige.

It's a bit surprising that the SCC or the local union hasn't set up a RWC "party central". They could have used it to promote the upcoming sevens and heartland rugby in general. As well as making a few bob on the side.

Oh well...off to the pub.

Ok well that was a fizzer...as in, damp squib.

The Copthorne has a function on Friday for the opening ($170 per head) and something on for the final. I spoke to the events manager...not very enthusiastic, possibly in the wrong job, things not good at home.

Given that Singapore is lobbying to hold some of the 2019 RWC games you would think, or at least I would, that the local union would be doing something now to promote the game on the back of all this 'free' coverage. Nope...not even a mention on their web-site home page....slack.

All Blacks all the way!
