Where would be the best area in the region to visit at this time of year weather wise from experience? Wherever I've looked it seems to be raining.
Also does anybody have any recommendations for places to stay?

We like the Malaysia East Coast. It's close, peaceful, authentic and the food is awesome. Great for kids too.

Sorry pp - have never really found food to be of a high standard in Malaysia. Not wanting to knock it or anything as I like it there but always limit time spent cos of the awful food on offer. Is there something/somewhere I'm missing?

Well, there's no accounting for taste. That may be it.
Meanwhile, we just got back from the islands and we had 4 meals in Mersing both Saturday and Sunday, simply because it's so yummie.
The food (read: nasi padang) there is awesome. Ayam merah, tempeh, asam pedas, it's all divine.
Same, by the way, in Penyabong, just up north a bit; the nasi goreng there is unbelievable, as of course is the seafood, being a fishing village.
We also tried a road side eatery and it too was deleesh.
The food on Tioman was below par though, but this has always been the case, perhaps because it's an island.
Generally though, give me Malaysian makan any time.

If someone uses the word 'deleesh', would you really follow their advice on food...

We're off to the west coast of Thailand in 2 weeks - it could be great weather or rainy because it is the last week before high season starts so we'll just have to hope we get lucky. It's also the last week of cheaply priced hotel rooms so we're taking the chance.
Last time I went to Thailand in the off season was in July and it was decent weather, the only thing was that the sea was rough and not good for swimming. Hopefully the sea will be calmer at this time of year.
