Hi,

My boyfriend and I are keen campers. We're looking for any recommendations on quiet rural camping ideas.

We've tried Palau Ubin off Singapore but were looking for quieter areas.

When I've asked people in work they are keen to put me off going to Malaysia on grounds of muggingss and rape.  To me this seems a disproportionate fear of crime.

Does anyone have any ideas about camping say in Malaysia?

Cheers!

I know there's quite a large campsite near Mersing, perhaps a 15 minute drive further north. It's huge and has good facilities. Not sure what it's called (some Malay-sounding name) but it's in the Tanung Resang Bay.

The whole criminal thing is overblown. There's not a single country with less crime than Singapore. But that doesn't make the rest of the world a dangerous place.

We just came back from a weekend in tanjung resang after recommendation on this board. You can camp at the place we stayed - to give you a clue its at a sailing centre there whose name is sukalayar and I should think a google search on that will tell you what you need to know. Take mosquito net and cream and you'll have a good time!

Yes, that place rings a bell.

The outfit that was quite prompt to reply to our inquiries is the name of the country in the header of OP's question, followed by Sea Sports. Sorry for the puzzle, but otherwise it may appear as if I'm advertising.

Just a quick extra word. The Northeast monsoon is almost upon us. This means that the usually pleasant breezy weather will be replaced by blustery spells, accompanied by heavy downpours. Once the rains end, around December, the Malaysia East Coast will be a sailing, windsurfing and, kite-boarding heaven till about March.

Wave surfers can also get their kicks during the January-March months, because the NE winds sweep up pretty decent surf at Desaru, Tanjung Resang and Cerating and even Kuantan.

Surf's up Smiley

Sorry to say PP, but that place you mentioned does not own the place down on Resang, as we found to our disappointment when we went this last weekend. The MSS people are merely an agent and not physically present in Resang. My advice is to go direct to the s....l..... people who actually own the place, who I mention in my previous post further up this thread. They are v helpful and straightforward.

We drove towards Desaru and then took the coast road up on a north heading. About 20 mins north of Desaru there are a few very nice places to camp. We just went down a little track about 50metres from the beach and parked up and set up camp. We biked the next day and found 2 or 3 other spots too. And only 2 hours from Singapore and no other people. Nice.

Hmm, we've been a few times now and there's been chaps from mss each time. They took us on a climb on that mountain and assisted when we rented gear.

OK...maybe I'm mistaken then...that's just the impression I got! Glad it worked out well for you. Whatever the set up Tanjung Resang is certainly a good little location for a quick break.

We just came back, spent a few days there with the kids. It's a nice place, pretty low key and peaceful. There were a handful of kite-boarders out having a great time in the strong breeze, that was fun to watch.

Apart from the sailing and surfing going on, Tanjung Resang is a great place for a quiet few days away with the family. The resort is new, clean but fairly basic, so don't go if you're into fancy marble, pluche carpets etc.
