We have friends coming in to Singapore for a few weeks in two weeks.  Looking for some good bars/clubs to take them to.  We are all in our 30s like live bands and a bit of dancing though not a prerequisite.  Haven't been out forever, so would appreciate any thoughts on new places that anyone could recommend. Local atmosphere would be good.

Also any fun new restaurants ( by fun.... some atmosphere and buzz, good food, any type, not too expensive).

Thanks for the help in advance.

I have to admit I don't go out to anywhere too happening these days but if I had friends in town who did want to I think I'd just have an internet search to see what places had live music and which bars are considered good - lots of sites around that you can find info about that kind of thing.  Type 'nightclubs' or 'nightlife' in Singapore' and something like 'new or trendy restaurants' into google and see what it comes up with.

When I was younger and had friends visiting I often used to take them for a bit of a bar crawl along Boat/Clark Quays and see where it took us.  You can always do the Chijmes/Orchard area another night and maybe places like Sentosa (not really sure what Sentosa''s bars are like at night) and Bugis and places like that.

Sometimes we'd end up in a club, sometimes just in bars until the early hours.  I don't go to many clubs any more but it's easy enough to find bars that are open late and quite a few have live bands on, especially at weekends.  My friends always enjoyed themselves - the climate, the late opening hours.........it didn't really matter too much where we went.

The thing is, it's not Vegas, it's never going to be that happening or have the same kind of party atmosphere (and the people who work in these places don't have the same kind of party-town attitude), but it is still possible to have a fun night out with friends.

decent live bands here? We've yet to come across them and it's probably because we don't know where to go.

Had much better luck in BKK, but that's prob because it's a bigger population too. I'm not talking about the cheesy music end either.  Thanks.

Bohemians ?...there is no such thing here,  Cheesy.

Go to BKK or Pattaya and see the good bands from UK, US & Europe play latest stuff.

Or if you fancy a really special weekend of nightlife and clubs that rock until 4am or until the last guy leaves, go up to Hong Kong

Really guys, it's sad we're looking forward to that and don't have a cool band to listen to this weekend. Perhaps I STILL don't know where to go.

Well there are bands which play here, but whether or not they're your cup of tea I don't know.  A lot of bands I've heard in the past just do covers, there are local bands, some of whom are quite good but you have to know where to look - I can't really tell you though I'm afraid (I haven't been out and about in town for ages) but you must have done some searches about this kind of thing, looked on sites like 'Stomp' etc, asked questions on other forums (not necessarily expat forums).

The teeny tiny Home club along the river used to be an OK place for bands but I'm not even sure if it's still going (it was in the Riverwalk building).  The Prince of Wales on Dunlop St has bands, the Crazy Elephant used to (is it even still there?).  The Pump Room, the Highlander, some of those others down the river, even Lau Pa Sat used to sometimes have a band in the evenings (not a very good band but a band nonetheless   Wink  ).  There's also the Hard Rock - they often have bands on.

More well-known - Elton John, Scissor Sisters, Good Charlotte...........none of whom I like, but at least they're making the effort to come here.

Thing is, Singapore's a tiny place, I've known many bands over the years cancel due to poor ticket sales - they've got to know they're going to draw a big crowd to even bother coming and they usually only stop here en-route to somewhere more exciting which is why they play here on lame days of the week like Mondays.

But yes, there's definitely a niche in the market for a decent club with live bands playing which isn't necessarily a club for under 25 year olds.

pp, you have no suggestions for specific places which is what the op asked for?

Plane tix to bkk, bali, hcm etc aren't all that much and if someone is staying here a few weeks, why not take them to one of these more vibrant spots?

Hawker fine but not every night for all of us and certainly cannot say it constitutes an amazing party scene.

bangkok is the place to go to as is full of younger and more up to date expat bands, not these repetitive tired jazz and blues gits which you get shoved down your throat here week in week out.  I dont understand this thing they have about jazz or blues here nobody likes it, nobody wants it, and its dead everywhere else in the world yet half the pubs here insist on having a geriatric expat band on stage churning out this garbage.
