My parents are applying PR and since I'm under 21 I'm eligible to be a PR too.

However, I don't want to join NS. I want to work right after I complete my bachelor degree not spend 2 years in the army.

Is there anyway to get around this?

Easy, let your parents apply for P.R. There is no obligation for you to be a P.R. Simply remain on your Dependants Pass or Employment Pass or whatever Pass you are currently on.

Be aware however, that should you at some time in the future also apply for P.R it is possible that they will require you to do N.S because your parents are P.R

Please be civil, this is Singapore with a Capital S. Do you NAtional Service. Blokes like you give expat a bad name.

However, I do know of a lot of Malaysians who are born and schooled here apply for Singapore citizenship on their 30th Birthday to skip out on National Service.

They are taught well in the art of "Kiasuism" and "Kiasism". Looks like you're getting a head start much to the chagrin of NSed Singaporeans.

Or like most on this board would say...grow up and grow a spine and commit to National Service.  Then again, they have a way of bitting back at you. That's why expats are such lovable being for the SPGs and policy makers.

Agh,

I think it all depends how long you are planning to stay in Singapore.
If you will be staying here for the rest of your life... do your part!

You will be trained to fight for your country.
If Singapore will not be your country...no need to get trained to fight for it.

Give him a break - His parents are applying for PR, not him, so why should he do NS if he doesn't want to?

He wants to work, it's not like he wants to bum around sponging off his parents, is it?

And what are you going on about Counting Down telling him to 'be civil' and saying that 'blokes like you give expat a bad name'?Huh  Agh must have typed some insult in invisible ink or something, because I certainly can't see where he's not being civil!!!

Non Smoker, it is NOT possible to remain on dependent's pass after your parents become a PR. Taking the PR they will have to cancel their employment pass, so what will the "dependent" depends on??

The choice is to apply for Student's pass and that's it. Mind you, if you graduate, and then looking for job here, it is much harder without a PR-ship. If the guy wants to work outside singapore, then student pass it is. If he wants to work here..... well.
I don't know whether if he ever applies for PR in the future, the govt will consider the fact that he doesn't want to be a PR in the first place, and whether they would ultimately guess that the didn't want to be a PR earlier to avoid NS.

As others say, convenience comes at a price, so either get it and do the duty, or shun the convenience once and for all. There are alternatives.

If your parents are applying for PR, you can stay in Singapore on either a students Pass or a  long term social visit ( LTSVP) pass.
You only need to do National Service if YOU become PR.

So you don't want to do NS......

You can either stay on a student visa, and leave the country after you graduate, or become a PR now and renounce it just before you are supposed to enlist (trust me, many many Malaysian 2nd generation PRs do this every year).

Difference is, you might save some money on school fees as a PR as they charge different fees for PRs and foreign students (might not apply if you go to an international school).

Either way might come back to haunt you should you decide to settle down here after you graduate from higher education. That's a big MAYBE. But you will DEFINITELY waste 2.5 years of the best years of your life if you enlist.
