I don't know how prevalent this is but I'm just sharing an opinion in the hope that things will improve for the better.

I travelled to India 3 times in 6  months on overnight flights.  On these flights, mothers had a hard time calming babies who were affected by the change in cabin pressure nearing take-off and landing.  I don't see the mothers giving their little ones something to suck/drink to ease the pain in their ears. Instead, they would be rocking, shaking their babies in the hope that they would quieten down.  This doesn't happen as much on flights to Europe, US or Australia /NZ.

Are flight attendants and Indian mums ( not being prejudiced but they happen to be the ones having difficulty with babies) not aware of what to do?  Now, I use Lavender essential oil ( therapeutic grade) to relax and put myself to sleep.  Otherwise, I would feel terrible in the morning.

that the said indian mothers are reading this? What exactly is your point?

Maybe you should share some of your Lavender essential oil (therapeutic grade) with those poor mums, cos I bet they don't feel particularly great in the morning either.

Yes, I'm hoping some of the Indian mums would be reading this, including friends of Indian mums.  But I also would like to hear from others who may also experience the same problem - to confirm what I have observed.

I can share the Lavender oil but whether the mums are receptive to it is another story. I can also educate the flight attendants but not all are receptive either.  There's also the issue of whether I'm allowed to bring a 15 ml bottle of Lavender in my hand luggage. A 5 ml bottle may not be sufficient for take off and landings and there are quite a no. of mothers with babies on board!

As opposed to what?

Weapons grade?

What a ridiculous post.  All round!

Your post shows that you're an ignoramus.  You know absolutely nothing about the healing properties of essential oils.

Lavender oil might help you but it won't help the babies.

What they need is a bottle, dummy, thumb or Mum to suck on to release the pressure.

With respect, NMS, OP implies the babies cry the whole time (hence his lavender magic potion) then slags off Indian mums for trying to calm their babies by rocking them.  What an @rse.

"So funny" - you are a troll.  You're fighting imaginary battles in your head, boy.  If you failed to gain entry into the military, please do something constructive with your life.

Some of the responses here are clearly from people who don't really know how to express their thoughts in a rational way.

I don't care if you call me a racist, fact is that most Indians are people from a third world country. They also believe that the filthy waters of the Ganges have healing powers. What do you really expect...

As usual certain rogue elements ( the sh*t stirrers) are taking the discussion further down south.

I grew up, went to school and worked with some ethnic Indians in my office.  Our families knew each other well.  I'm certainly far from racist since I have close friends from most nationalities.  I'm just not so familiar with those from India and there are nearly 1.2 billion of them.

I do intend to speak to the airline staff about this on my next trip - I would really like to make it easier for everyone.  In fact, an Indian passenger asked me what oil I was using since he, too, had a hard time sleeping on the flight.  He smelt it and felt more at ease and he thanked me.  I didn't really sleep for long, but lavender did relax me a little. I still had go to work when I arrived in the morning. (The commercial lavender oil is for burning, not for topical use, that's why I mentioned "therapeutic grade" because of the specific methods of distillation.  If someone used the ordinary lavender, I don't know what it does to the skin...)

"In the pink" - you're always around to lighten things up.  Smiley

This is the end of my post. End of discussion.
