Today's Straits Times

The PM speaking at the NTUC said to expect low growth of between 1 to 3% only over the next few years due to the worlds economic problems, a maturing economy and less foreign workers coming in.

Where is the demand for all the property coming on the market over the next few years going to come from - no foreigners coming in (small part of the market anyway) and growth being small with pay rises being low - not looking good guys is it?

The editorial was also good about maids - that they will not always be available with other countries paying more and domestic economic growth in their home countries means less supply of workers overseas. Telling Singaporeans to prepare for changes in working practices and build networks of creches.

Sit back and watch the fun on this one!

The economy deteriorates and fewer Expats enter Singapore.
But the declining global economy will send many Expats home.

Its called a double-whammy.  Grin

It doesn't seem to be the higher paid expats they are complaining about but cheap foreign labor taking their jobs.

They also moan about not being able to get PMET (Professional, Managerial Executive and Technical) positions.

This is especially so in IT with all the Indians being taken on and now certain nefarious practices among some Indian recruiters has come to light and was reported in the Straits Times the howls are increasing.

To be honest they do have a point.

I thought this was because Indians were cheaper? One of the articles I read said that the company was cost cutting so hired an Indian and he only hired Indians.

Look, think about it, they have better IT skills, are more competitive and aggressive, push everyone out of their way that gets in their way, work harder not to mention they work for 1/5th of what a western expat earns.  Also this is a fantastic place to migrate to for them and their kids.    Its not going to change.  If anything more Indian IT pros are on their way.

That is around 3-5 times more growth than the UK (which is one of the best European economies now). Most of Europe would probably be contracting over the new few years, don't even talk about growth. In fact, many Western European nations are trying to escape bankruptcy and would be lucky if they do not default on their debts over the next few years, so don't even talk about contracting.

And that is about the same amount of growth that the USA is expected to experience. Bear in mind the USA's 'growth' is actually their government pumping in hundreds of billions of their own money to stimulate the economy. Not really 'growth', just more currency inflation and less purchasing power for their own citizens. But it does give Americans jobs though.

Singapore's 1-3% growth forecast after growing 15% last year is pretty good news. That is still 2-6% growth for the next few years if you ignore last year's freak performance.

I am assuming you know something about basic economics, which of course, is a very big assumption.

Indian IT workers are finding it hard to get work permits here now.

Not just IT either - a colleague was about to hire an Indian but we said look at him - he wants to use Singapore as a stepping stone to somewhere else as well as being a job jumper -do not go to the expense of bringing him over. The FUD marketing worked.

I know lots of other guys in other industries have the same point of view - more bother than they are worth.

Well, they sure dont use expat IT guys here anymore.  I was in IT here way back in the early 90's and we used to command big pay checks back then for doing, well, not a lot really.  Then these Indians came and took all the expat jobs.   Nothings changed.  If the IT guy in the office is not an Indian he is most certainly Filipino.  The last expat IT guy I saw was way back in 1995 about the time I decided that our days were numbered and left the profession.

Still here - regional managers and the like.

But you are correct its mostly Indians on shit pay and Flippers on even less. The locals thng 4k a month is good and 6k out of this world in IT so many try to avoid it now.

I bailed out of the profession, some regrets but life goes on.  Indian IT people are across the whole world now.  They are all getting passports for america & canada now.

Is this really happening in reality?

Most companies are cutting down on western expats and are going for regional expats or locals. They are also giving Local+ contracts to the western expats they have.

Do you have any documented examples as in the IT cases MOM have investigated about Indian bosses?

This downturn will send lots of expats home,  May be a great opportunity to re invent and start a relocation business.
