Boozed rampage Kiwi facing cane skips Singapore By Abby Gillies Wednesday Dec 21, 2011
A New Zealander accused of taking part in a drunken taxi rampage in Singapore has skipped bail and his family say he has no plans to return.
An arrest warrant had been issued for former Junior Tall Black Robert Dahlberg, 34, who was working as a broker, Singapore police said.
The Nelson man was charged with grievous bodily harm and assault after the incident in April last year - charges with a sentence of up to 10 years' imprisonment and the cane, said police.
In July this year, Dahlberg was granted bail for $25,000 on the condition he returned to Singapore for sentencing. However, he did not return on July 29 and is understood to have travelled to London and Hong Kong.
Singapore courts issued a warrant for his arrest on September 12.
Dahlberg's father, Bill, confirmed Robert's bail had been paid and his passport returned to him by officials.
Asked if his son would be returning to Singapore, he replied, "I would think not". He declined to comment further.
Dahlberg had been living in Singapore for about five years and was out drinking with two friends, British man Robert James Springall, 24, and Nathan Robert Miller, 35, an Australian, at Suntec City on April 11 last year when the incident happened.

What a fool. He is only 34 years old and lives in NZ or Australia and travels to Honk Kong and London? He will surely pass through Changi one day. However long it takes, he will be escorted off the flight and his punishment may well be more severe.

They should have given him a couple of hundred strokes of the cane on the spot.
Instant canings should be implemented for foreigners as CM6. I bet that would stop their speculation and heavy drinking.

Here's a little more on it: http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews/Crime/Story/A1Story20111220-317283.html....... The Kiwi was granted bail of $25,000 and was given permission to leave Singapore for London and Hong Kong from July 11 to 29.
Springall, an options broker like Dahlberg, was released on a bail of $6,000, while Miller's bail was $10,000.
After his trip, Dahlberg was supposed to surrender his passport to the Singapore police on Aug 1.
........
Singapore has an extradition agreement with Commonwealth countries, including New Zealand, but it is not known if Dahlberg is now there.
The authorities here have to track down his whereabouts first before the Attorney-General's Chambers puts in a request for extradition.
It looks like the court figured the extra bail money would be enough to get him to come back, and knowing he could be extradited set it at a fairly low amount (Fricker's bail was $100K). From the article it also sounds like the other two guys did most of the mayhem.

The media is reporting conflicting news... some write that he is charged with causing hurt, others write that he is charged with causing grevious hurt. You cannot be caned for causing hurt but you may, keyword may, be caned for causing grevious hurt. Grevious hurt is when there is a fracture or some permanent loss of sight, hearing etc suffered by the victim.
Judging by the circumstances of the case, even if he gets charged for causing grevious hurt, I personally doubt he will be caned. Caning for those cases is normally reserved for repeat offenders or for gang members or for group attacks with weapons... very serious cases.
Kiwi bloke must have got a shock that Singaporean police actually do carry guns. Anyway, this is quite a small case really, not sure why he decided to jump bail.

This kiwi chap has also killed his chances of getting a work permit or residency elsewhere since a police report is usually required. Unless of course, he has 2 passports or some agreement between his native country and the other country of intended residence.
I encountered someone years ago who confessed to having a record of assault at aged 18, the folly of being a drunk youth at a pub brawl. He learnt from his mistake and used another passport when getting a work permit.

The report I read said that he pushed someone into a pillar causing the persons nose to break. So I guess that is where the grievous hurt comes in.

If any of us here had the choice between staying and facing a possible prison sentence with caning and doing a runner - how many of us would stay?

Does he have a choice after committing a crime? His action explained his embarrassment to face the music being an overrated FT ang moh charged in an asian country.

As usual the locals descend into ignorant, racist generalisations. I really wonder in this case whether the local guys started it and got beaten black and blue as a result of their own aggression and cockiness. I have noticed a lot of racism and resentment from local guys to caucassions. This often results in local aggression and cocky insolence. Normally foreigners just turn the other cheek and walk away, but in cases where they don't the locals will generally need an army to protect themselves and if they don't have one then they are going to get a good and proper whooping. Of course if a gang of locals attacks the "right foreigner", one who isn't the fighting type and isn't large and well built, they will probably be able to win and normally the locals either gang up on a weak and single foreigner or engage the services of a large gang of thugs, generally bouncers etc, in other cases. Perhaps in this case the usual strategy of attacking in a gang just went wrong and they ended up whining to the police?
