IB schools are not supposed to stream, but I know one that does in maths.  Streaming seems to be out of fashion.

it's useful though if you have some kids who are really good at the subject and some which are not.  Not really fair to hold the bright ones back with the teacher having to focus more attention on the not so bright ones.

And I'm speaking from experience - I was one of the not so bright ones in Maths and was in the bottom group.  I can't see that there would have been any benefit to me being in the same group as the Maths geniuses - and I can't see that it would have been of any benefit to them either.

even if bright, not everyone likes being a competitive accelerated environment.

some of the 'bottom ones' actually soar to the top, once they move out of the fast-track competition with the genuises/perpectual muggers.

i have had that experience firsthand. was always put in A class among the top-ranking, and i fared mediocre there, with the very occasional flash in the pan top marks.

was then streamed into B class one year, when Math grades were taken into consideration for segregation. (the Math scores in B and C classes were notably weaker, with the C class students coming in with weaker-averages in everything).

i actually rose right to the top of B class, and even secured top Math grades overall on some of the common grade tests (surprisingly beating even the brightest in A class' Math test scores sometimes).

emerged first in B class that year, with all my subjects pulling in better grades than ever before (this included even my already strong areas) ... Math was good enough to get me back into A class (bad move perhaps) ... and even received a couple of prizes.

in retrospect, being out of competition and the A-environment was a good move. i liked being in B, and perhaps it was a very supportive teacher my learning experience there was definitely more fun/rewarding than in A (where expectations were very high).

streaming is not all bad. it really depends on the individual. people thrive and are motivated under different environments.

know your own child and his/her capabilities, and advise accordingly. even if streamed into a lower track - don't be negative about it.

To OP - From what i have gathered,it does happen in the classroom and there are different working groups/assignments set depending on where your child sits ....
