Bed bugs?

We're trying to work out why my wife and I have suffered from bites in and around our condo. We can't see any mosquitoes but she's waking up each day with itchy spots on her body. We think it could be from bed bugs on either the bed or the couch. We also live near East Coast and were bitten by sand flies about a month ago - could that be related?
Anyone else gone through something similar?
Is there any service that tests for bed bugs? We are renting a quite expensive unit from a quite cheap couple so if the mattress needs replacing we will have to show proof.
Thanks for your suggestions - and recommendations.

take a look at the edges of your mattress. take of the sheet and look. If you see brown spots or bugs then you have bed bugs.
You may have been bitten by Noseums, little bugs that are near greenery areas which bite but you dont see them. If you itch the bite itches more and become blisters. Buy antihistamine cream and apply but each time you touch or scratch the blisters form. Best not to itch at all and it will go away. Stay away from green shrubs. The noseums are attracted to perfumed smells like creams etc...and i think are attracted to citronella smell

HI, a telltale sign of bed bug bites, as opposed to other mites, is that they tend to occur in straight lines. For mossies and other insects, the bites will be random pattern. Try googling for images to see the difference.
