I am looking for a pair of diamond earrings. I looked in a couple of high street shops, however was astonished that they were S$16K upwards and not even that big. I am looking for about 0.5 - 0.75 of a carat for each one.

Are there any diamond dealers here or places that are not a complete rip off?

Singapore is actually one of the best places to buy diamonds.  You get exactly what you pay for.  Sounds like you are uneducated about diamonds and what all the factors are that can influence their prices.

The chains here - try diamond street which adjoins the ION and the Wisma Atria malls - are all abiding to the latest diamond pricing charts.

Go into one of the top stores and ask some questions about the ins and outs of diamonds. They will invariably be willing to spend some time explaining it all to you (most well-to-do locals have this info built into their DNA, by the way). Then, with your new-found knowledge, you will be ready to shop for those sparklers.

don't be swayed by names or packaging. outside of that little signature blue box/bag with a capital T ... no one is going to know where it came from.
but you will be paying pver top dollar for a small size, ie you pay for the name, but get very little diamond in return.

for the same price, better carat and clarity bling-bling can be found at the lesser name stores.

Precisely! So go into one of the top LOCAL stores (not the one with the duck egg blue packaging (groan) in one of the big malls on Orchard. The staff at the TOP local stores will be very helpful and informative. If you want to DO the whole packaging thing, then, lucky you, those foreign stores have a presence here.  Otherwise Tom, Dick or Harry (rhymes with?) LOCAL store will do very well, thank you.

I'm not so sure that Harry is a local paragon of virtue, I thought it was originally HK-based

They are more local than the Tiffanys, Cartiers, Bulgaris, Pommellatos, etc, of this world.
