There ARE poor people in Singapore, just like there ARE poor people in other countries including pro-welfare Western countries.

The poor in Singapore are perhaps less visible, compared to the highly visible poor in the West. Long-time panhandlers begging for spare change in their familiar corners, unwashed homeless hobos pushing their carts, obvious druggies. And an endless round of dumpster divers with their ski poles rummaging for old food, or household discards/can/bottles they trade in for spare change.

And yes, these include the young, as well as the elderly from "80-200".
They line up once a month for their welfare cheques which covers subsidised rent and minimal food, food bank donations (from public), soup-kitchen freebies, warm showers and free injection sites.

The rest of the time, these folk have a daily schedule to rotate around the neighbourhood dumpsters and sit outside stores to ask for spare change. I have noticed hey also have a 'community break-time' where it's not uncommon to see a buggy gathering of neighbourhood pandlers socialising durirg nice  sunny weather at any nearby park.

Go to Geylang in the evening, they're not all foreigners making runs to JB for a chop every month.  You'll have the opportunity to meet plenty of local Singaporean single mothers struggling to make a living.
