If you live near Joo Chiat Rd there are some bike shops down there which sell makes other than the Malaysian brand - Aleoca (or whatever it is called that Carrefour and Giant only seem to sell).  We got a Raleigh bike down there and a BMX.

Also check it's got both brakes - some of those children's bikes only have one and I don't think that's very safe.

I just bought a bike today for my 5-year-old not far from Ikea Alexandra.  It is quite a large shop but for kids they have just one model.  My daughter really liked it so we bought it.  The brand is Trek - a U.S. brand.

They also have a shop in Tanglin Place next to Tanglin Mall.

Hope it helps.

I've seen their shop near the Commonwealth MRT station while I was on the MRT.  I did ring them, but they didn't carry any bike suitable for kids aged 5-6.
