Does anyone have any experience living in Geylang? Am a single female expat and looking at moving into a condo the area, but given its reputation, no sure if it's an OK neighbourhood? Would like to hear from people who actually live there now, or have in the past. Thanks.

The side of Geylang close to Paya Lebar MRT has a couple of condos along the MRT tracks, no worries, decent neighborhood.
If you are a Western expat (i.e. "white"), you should not have any problem... if you are Asian-looking though, you might receive lot of attention from guys, especially if you walk alone at night.

We lived there for 2 years, in a condo across from city plaza. Family with 2 kids. Never had any problems day or night and I  wouldn't hesitate to move back to the area in the future.

I stay there too. I don't really care about the life there and what people think about girls staying there. As long as we know deep within that we are not the type of girls they thought we are. Smiley

I'm Singaporean born and bred. And if I had kids I won't want to live in Geylang. I don't think I like having to caution my little ones not to wonder into certain segments of the neighbourhood and having to explain that that's due to the illicit activities going on in those lanes.

Its a big bad world out there. You need to teach them these sorts of things if you expect them to survive. What are you going to do if they want to go and study in New York or London when they are 19, and they aren't even equipped with the street skills to survive getting a curry puff in Geylang?

We've lived here for a little while and its been no problem at all.  I have a little girl here and there are a surprising number of expats and families in the area - increasingly so as the rents go up in other areas. Its a vibrant area and a great place to live.

Depends also what profession you're in. If it's advertising, you'd feel well at home

The part of Geylang considered "bad" (which is nothing compared to "bad" parts of most major cities in the western world) would be the even numbered Lorongs, from about Lorong 24 on down.  The "bad" is basically just street walkers, and the old chinese uncles that are their pimps.  The people who get harassed the most are young white males as their assumed to have money and looking for "fun".

you can say that again, our "bad" involves people running after you trying to car jack you, or if you are on foot, trying to mug you.  SG's"bad" looks like DisneyLand compared to what I have seen back home in the USA.
