Internet access in Singapore is fast and easy. All ISP's provide virtually overnight account activation, which means you can get onto the Net in no time after arriving here. There are three local Internet access service providers - Cyberway, Pacific Internet and Singnet. As at end-1997, there were some 230,000 dial-up users.
Internet access is separate from telephone services, so you will need a phone line before you can get on the Internet. Phone charges are billed by the phone company, and Internet access charges are billed by the ISP. (See section on Telephone Services.) Besides basic access, ISPs offer 56K, ISDN, leased line and roaming services. Basic access plans vary in the amount of access time given. Monthly subscriptions can range from $9.95 (for 12 hours) to $100 (unlimited access). Most ISPs also include a one-time activation fee of about $40. Additional usage and services are charged accordingly.
Singapore has a nationwide broadband network called Singapore ONE (One Network for Everyone). Singapore ONE promises fast Internet access as well as interactive multimedia applications. You can access Singapore ONE either through cable modem or ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line). Singapore ONE is in its pilot stage with about 2,000 users on board.
